Following a very successful weeklong March 2010 studio/workshop by Pratt Institute planning & architecture graduate students to São Paulo, Brazil, we have formed a committe to propose and organize a similar Return Exchange program to bring the host Brazilian housing activists to New York. The primary goal is to broaden the range of effective policies and tactics available to housing rights advocates in both cities. This goal will be accomplished by meetings between the visitors and their counterparts in housing organizations, tenants’ rights advocates, homeless shelter providers, residents’ associations, and architectural and planning technical assistance organizations. Visits will be conducted to several types of housing around NYC: homeless shelters, squats, public housing, senior housing, rent-controlled apartments, subsidized homeownership, and coop housing. A public forum would be held for the Brazilian guests to present their approaches to housing issues in São Paulo and to respond to questions by the general public.
